More details

Yellow Muscovite A Potassium Aluminum Silicate Hydroxide with formula: KAl2(AlSi3O10)(F, OH)2. Hardness is 2.5. This is a new find from Itinga, Brazil, and some analysis has been done to find out : from Gems & Gemology: Two polished samples of this attractive yellow material were donated to GIA by Mauro Pantò (The Beauty in the Rocks, Perugia, Italy), and one of them was chemically analyzed at the University of New Orleans. Electron microprobe data showed that it contained 0.31 wt.% FeO, 0.18 wt.% MnO, and 0.03 wt.% TiO2; direct-coupled plasma analysis showed only 0.32 wt.% Li2O. The sample was therefore identified as muscovite. The same piece was also analyzed by specular visible-range spectroscopy by Dr. George Rossman at the California Institute of Technology (Pasadena, California), but no interpretable spectral features could be resolved. Therefore, more research will be necessary to determine the origin of the yellow color. Nevertheless is an interesting new material with a pleasant color, not easy to cut and polish due to the book-like rosettes, a challenge when polish it. Size:17.4x15x8.8 mm. Weight: 11.75 ct.
